Florida Keys

The Florida Keys is an archipelago of about 1700 islands in the southeast United States.

They begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas.

The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern tip of Key West is just 98 miles (157 km) from Cuba.

The Keys are undergoing a tremendous amount of change. New construction is everywhere, and is evident when you first reach the entrance at Key Largo. Chances are that many of the images presented here are of areas that have already changed. Other images represent a lasting memory of locations businesses and landmarks that are slated to change.

Chapel Trail Nature Preserve

Located in the westernmost part of the city of Pembroke Pines in southeast Florida, the Chapel Trail Nature Preserve is a 450 acre wetland that was established in the 1990’s. Home to 120 species of birds, deer, marsh rabbits, alligators, snakes, turtles, largemouth bass and insects, the preserve is regularly visited by Audubon members, bird watchers, environmentalists, and of course, photographers.

The Preserve has a 1650 ft. boardwalk, which has been recently renovated after being severely impacted by hurricane Wilma. It also has canoe rentals.

I am fortunate to have this location near my home. At only 15 minutes away, I can get there fairly quickly if the weather turns conducive to shooting. I’ve now had the opportunity to visit the preserve throughout the year, and I can say that the best times of the year appear to be January through May. The birding activity increases, as does the new growth of the native vegetation. I’ve found that the rest of the year is too hot, and there is little animal activity due to the heat.

Wetlands around Pembroke Pines

I'm blessed to be able to live in an area that has an abundance of man-made wetlands. You might think that if they are man-made, they may not be any good, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Numerous species inhabit these areas, coexisting with the local human population. The birds are somewhat skittish, as opposed to how they would be in more remote and less populated areas, but still photo opportunities abound.

Green Cay Nature Preserve

The Green Cay Wetlands and Nature Center are located at 12800 Hagen Ranch Road, which is in suburban Boynton Beach, Florida, on the east side of Hagen Ranch Road, between Boynton Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.

A 1.5-mile elevated boardwalk includes two loops that wind throughout the wetlands.

Wakodahatchee Wetlands

Derived from a Seminole Indian phrase meaning "created waters," the Wakodahatchee Wetlands was constructed by Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department next to the existing System 3 Water Treatment Plant located one mile southeast of the Southern Region Water Reclamation Facility.

The Wakodahatchee Wetlands have attracted an abundant variety of wildlife, including turtles, frogs, otters, alligators and birds. More than 140 different species of birds have been spotted at the site. These species thrive in the various wetland zones.

A three-quarter mile boardwalk winds through three of the wetland's ponds.

The Wakodahatchee Wetland is located in suburban Delray Beach, Florida, on the east side of Jog Road, between Woolbright Road and Atlantic Avenue. The site is on the southeast side of Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department's Southern Region Operations Center at 13026 Jog Road, Delray Beach.

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.

It contains the southern 25% of the original Everglades, and receives about a million visitors annually. It is the third largest national park in the lower 48 states.

Unlike most other national parks in the United States, Everglades National Park was created to protect a fragile ecosystem, as opposed to safeguarding a geographic feature. There are 36 federally threatened or protected species that exist within park boundaries that include the Florida panther, American crocodile, and West Indian manatee.

Everglades National Park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America, and it contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere. There are over 350 species of birds that live within Everglades National Park, as well as 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 mammals, and 50 different kinds of reptiles.
